Stimulus plan delivers jobs and new homes in Charlton

Media Release

The Hon Greg Combet AM MP

3 November 2009

Member for Charlton, Greg Combet today announced that provisional approval had been given for $25,634,934 million worth of social housing projects in Charlton that will deliver 95 new homes.

Mr Combet said that new social housing construction in Charlton was a great example of how the Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan is supporting jobs during the global recession.

“Around Australia, $5.6 billion is being invested in the social housing initiative to deliver more than 19,000 new homes with the assistance of State and Territory Governments and the not-for-profit sector,” Mr Combet said.

“This is the single biggest investment in social housing ever undertaken by an Australian Government.

“Across the country, the Government estimates that the social housing component of the stimulus plan is supporting more than 15,000 jobs.

“Here in Charlton, more than $25 million from the social housing initiative has been provisionally approved to deliver 95 new homes.

“This new construction work will support jobs and small business in Charlton at a time when the local economy is feeling the impact of the global recession.

“As well as boosting the local economy, this investment has the important social benefit of increasing the supply of affordable housing.

“The lack of affordable housing has been a major problem in this area for some time and I am grateful that the Rudd Government is helping to address the problem through this important stimulus program.

“It also demonstrates the great results that can be achieved when different levels of government work together with local industry to provide affordable housing.”
