Minister for Human Services, Kim Carr, and Charlton MP, Greg Combet, today announced that Wallsend would benefit from easier access to services with Centrelink and Medicare to work side-by-side under one roof at 70 Robert Street, Wallsend, as of Monday 8 October.
"The one-stop shop will address the needs of local residents by offering a wider range of Department services in one place,” Senator Kim Carr said.
“This change will mean residents get to experience improved access to Department of Human Services support.”
Charlton MP Greg Combet said the co-location of services would provide more convenience for Wallsend residents.
“Having more government services available from the one place will be great for Wallsend families and the seniors’ community who regularly use both Medicare and Centrelink services. Now they no longer have to travel to two offices to get things done.”
The service centre will receive a facelift to provide a pleasant environment for the community and staff, and better access to both Medicare and Centrelink services. The new features include more self service options and a more open layout for customers.
The new one-stop shop will offer electronic payment options for Medicare benefits. People can register their bank account details and have their rebate deposited directly to their bank account the next business day. Alternatively they can swipe their debit card to receive their funds immediately.
Senator Kim Carr said the Government is expanding the number of locations across Australia where people can access Centrelink and Medicare services in one spot.
“The rollout of one-stop shops like Wallsend’s is increasing the number of places people can access both Medicare and Centrelink services. Medicare is now available from about 385 locations, up from 240 since 2009,” Senator Kim Carr said.
