MEDIA RELEASE
29 March 2012
The Member for Charlton, Greg Combet, has welcomed the inclusion of more than 110,000 Hunter premises in the next three-year construction plan of the National Broadband Network (NBN).
“A good portion of the Hunter Region has been earmarked by NBN Co for fibre roll-out over the next three years, including seventeen suburbs in the electorate of Charlton.”
“This is a massive infrastructure project which will deliver high speed broadband to every Australian home and business.”
“Today’s announcement shows the first sites in the Hunter that will have fibre delivered, and as work progresses more local sites will come online.”
“With a timeline now locked in we can set about preparing for the transformation the NBN will bring to our region.”
Suburbs in Charlton included in the 3 year construction plan are:
Cardiff
Cardiff Heights
Cardiff South
Elermore Vale
Fletcher
Garden Suburb
Glendale
Hillsborough
Jesmond
Lambton
Lakelands
Macquarie Hills
Maryland
New Lambton
New Lambton Heights
Rankin Park
Wallsend
The announcement has been welcomed by local business representatives, including Wallsend Town Business Association co-ordinator, Kathie Heyman.
“The Wallsend Town Business Association, and local businesses, are excited that NBN is coming to Wallsend,” Ms Heyman said.
“It’s great for local businesses, schools, doctors, medical specialists and of course, for our community.”
“It will bring new business opportunities and economic development to our area, which in turn will create greater employment opportunities and encourage more people to want to live and work in their local area”
The NBN will connect 93 per cent of homes and businesses around Australia to high-speed fibre broadband, capable of speeds of up to one gigabit per second. Seven per cent will have access to high-speed fixed-wireless or next-generation satellite technologies providing peak speeds of 12 megabits per second.
“We know the NBN will transform the way we do things - from the delivery of school education and health services, to business and personal communication,” Mr Combet said.
“The NBN is all about digital innovation, but the network is just the platform – the really exciting part is the new possibilities it opens up.”
“I look forward to seeing the impact the NBN will have in Charlton.”
